Press Release

ART Singapore 2008 to Feature Revolutionary Kinetic Sculptures by American Artist Bruce Peebles Opening on October 9, 2008

USA (October 3, 2008) – Simultaneously simple and complex, Bruce Peebles' mesmerizing kinetic sculpture, Antikythera, captivates viewers with its fluid movement. Peebles’ new works combine the mathematical patterns of music with the organic shapes of nature such as ocean waves or the underwater grace of a sea anemone. Antikythera and its progeny provoke contemplation from a variety of perspectives: as a hypnotic work of art; as a visualization of the complexities of time and motion; and as an intricate and beautiful mechanical device.

These revolutionary works will debut during ART Singapore 2008, the annual contemporary art fair featuring over 100 galleries from Southeast Asia and around the world. Peebles and U.S.-based Callisto Gallery chose ARTSingapore to unveil Antikythera because it is here that leading art galleries launch new pieces by young artists that will set the trend for the next few years in the ever-expanding Asian market for contemporary art.

"I find the added dimension of actual movement endlessly captivating," explains Peebles. "The underlying constant remains form, simplicity and order. Unlike previous works, including my own, in which the elements of movement and forward momentum can occur only in the mind of the viewer, Antikythera takes the conversation to its next logical progression – actual movement. In our digital environment, this manifestation of actual movement represents a natural progression." For photos, video and more information on artist Bruce Peebles, go to www.callistoartgallery.com.

The Peebles works include motorized elements controlled by computer chips. The computer program that causes the mechanisms to run in these sculptures are the manifestation of the artist’s thought. The program becomes the sculpture; the ghost in the machine is the thought that has been imbedded into the work. The result elevates the viewer to a co-creator who interprets internally and instantly the movement cycle of the work at any given point; thus sealing the communication bond between viewer and the work. Frozen, the sculptures portray a three-dimensional memory of the original conversation.

"The opening at ART Singapore will unveil a new chapter of my work, and an important step toward broadening perceptions of robotic art," Peebles noted. Seasoned collectors of contemporary sculpture will recognize the originality of the concepts embodied in the new works. Children simply stare in wonder.
